Diamondbacks Pitchers Hitting Injuries Statistics Rookies Blogs Sam Buca’sPublished: May 17, 2009
The Evergreen Park Diamondbacks headed into the weekend series against the Lansing Mammoths without a victory, but behind outstanding pitching, timely hitting and excellent defense, they emerged from the double header with their first two wins of the season.
In Game One, the Diamondbacks were led by pitchers Ed Sochacki (1-0) and Jim Cezak, who together, allowed only one hit over five innings while striking out 10 Mammoths. Offensively, the team erupted for 11 runs over the course of the game as the Mammoth pitcher was unable to find the strike zone. On the day, the Diamondbacks collected 11 walks and posted 7 hits in the Game One victory.
Game Two featured more of the same. The Diamondbacks received excellent pitching by veteran Don Myczek (1-0) and the rest of the bullpen while the offense pounded out another seven runs on the afternoon.
Key in both victories was that the Diamondbacks were nearly at full strength with their roster. With a majority of the players returning from college, Evergreen Park was able to play their players at their normal positions and their aging veterans finally received some rest after being relied upon for the first four games of the year.
While it was a joyous day for the team, former manager Sergio Senese could still be heard bitching from the outfield over anyone of his three called-third strikes he was wrung up on. It just goes to show that you just can’t please everyone.
