Diamondbacks Pitchers Hitting Injuries Statistics Rookies Blogs Sam Buca’sPublished: May 10, 2009
The Diamondbacks found themselves up 5-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning despite having only two hits on the day. With what looked to be a safe lead, starting pitcher Ed Sochacki (0-0, 0.70 ERA) removed himself from the game, allowing his brother Thad Sochacki (0-1) to record the final three outs of the game.
Apparently, Thad and the Diamondbacks didn’t like the way a win would look on their perfect winless record and promptly decided to give the game back to the Nuts.
The Diamondbacks made three errors in the inning, while Thad Sochacki allowed four hits, a walk and a hit batter. Five runs managed to cross the plate in the bottom half of the inning for the Nuts. While all runs were unearned, Sochacki picked up the tough loss and the Diamondbacks managed to maintain their perfect record on the season, 0-3.
“This was not one of our best moments as a team,” said manager Joe Cipolla. “Several of our players are still not back from school and the people that were out there that game, half of them were playing out of position.”
Ryan Rizzi picked up the win for the Nuts despite giving up four unearned runs over two innings, while older brother Vinny Rizzi received a no-decision despite pitching five solid innings of one-hit ball.
